Loss of Identity Therapy

We all carry a sense of identity which we work to construct over time. The aim is to have a sense of identity where how we feel on the inside aligns with how people perceive us. However, when that breaks down, or when we don’t feel like we can be ourselves, we can feel lost. You might be feeling like something is wrong, but you can’t put your finger on it and you’re not sure if therapy will help.

I work with clients on this topic and can offer you the space to share all the parts of yourself. We can work together to understand what makes you who you are and to explore why it feels difficult to hold these things together in a way that feels whole. Our idea of who we are can be challenged at key moments in our lives and we can end up responding to the pressures and demands of other people. A powerful part of therapy can be uncovering whose demands it is that you’re responding to, and whether they line up with what you want for yourself.

We may spend time thinking about the way you protect parts of yourself and how this impacts you. If you’ve been protecting yourself for a while, you may also have a sense of anxiety or sadness that needs attention too.
