What does it mean to work psychodynamically? Essentially it means that we look at both the present and the past and how the two weave themselves together. Often in life we can feel like we repeat patterns. I believe those patterns tell us something of our history. By understanding the points in life we get ‘stuck’ we can start to make changes. As a therapist my goal is never to give you specific answers or solve your problems for you, instead I’m there to help you make sense of things and see things in a new light.
The space is yours to use as you wish, there’s no agenda for our sessions and there’s no right or wrong thing to say. There’s no such thing as rambling! By allowing yourself to talk and think, sometimes these connections make themselves known and we can explore what they mean for you.
I’m interested in learning about your experience and you are the expert in that. As your therapist, I can be a mirror for you. I might point out something you’ve said or a reaction you’ve had. We can look at our dynamic and notice whether there are similarities to other areas of your life. By working in this way together, we can understand how your puzzle pieces fit together and that gives you a chance to take a step back and understand the bigger picture.
I work affirmatively with issues around gender and identity. Confidentiality is fundamental to our working relationship and I follow the ethical guidelines of my governing body, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
